Did you know that January is Get Organized Month? This time of year is ideal for getting your ducks in a row. One of the best New Year's resolutions we can advise is to review and update your home inventory. During this month of getting organized, it offers the perfect opportunity to make sure that your insurance policies align with your needs.
The easiest way to update a home inventory is often done by moving room by room, examining the items currently listed in each space. Then, scan the list of items and the photos to determine what additions, deletions, or corrections need to be made.
Have your high-value belongings been sitting in a storage box for some time? If so, it could be worth getting these items appraised. Some belongings, such as gemstones, increase in value over time. Pass the appraisals on to your insurance representative if you choose to insure those items separately.
- Update all copies and store them safely
Now you've conducted your home inventory, it's important to save it and replace the older versions. Whether you have a written inventory or a digital document, you will want to keep this list safe. If you store it digitally, place one copy of it in the cloud so that you can access it from anywhere. Also, it is a good idea to email a copy of it to yourself - just to be safe. If you have a paper document, make copies and keep them in fire-proof safety boxes.
